"That's darling!"—Marilyn Maye

After all, what greater compliment could an artist like you pay a songwriter like me — not only to choose to sing his songs, but to feel his songs as you so clearly seem to feel mine? You truly are a kindred spirit.
—Norman Gimbel

...a sensational recording.

Macauley’s strong suit is interpretive. He unfailingly demonstrates an understanding of the lyric, to which he applies a steady reveal of meaning. Where there aren’t powerful bursts of bravado, there is instead consistently expert phrasing.  The up-tempo “For Me” was delivered with plenty of conviction and also featured prime pianistic proficiency by Tex Arnold. “It Was Me” an aching ballad of lost love was delivered with heartfelt intensity. Closing out It Was Me, Macauley offered the jaunty “Live For Life”, putting a cap on an album rich in the wonders of a lyricist who deserves the recognition.
